Photo Story

Bright Angel Trail, Grand Canyon
View from Bright Angel Trail

Hope and Confidence

The photo to the left was taken on the Bright Angel trail at the Grand Canyon.  A light rain and snow flurries greeted us that December morning.  The slowly shifting fog set a somber mood.  Hiking down the canyon was exciting, but we had to keep our eyes on the trail and not become mesmerized by the scenery.  Glancing up, I saw these two pine trees standing proudly on a ledge with a curious hole in the rock.

After stopping to take a few pictures, we continued hiking down the trail and suddently, for a brief moment, I saw a very young pine tree appear through the hole in the rock, and then it was gone. The viewing angle had to be just right to see the little pine on the other side.

Over the years, the little pine may have outgrown the size of the hole in the rock, or the ledge may have deteriorated from erosion. The larger pine is an image of confidence in the midst of uncertainty, and the little pine is hoping to one day be as beautiful as the large pine. The world around us is full of change and uncertainty, but the Lord is our Rock in whom we can depend.

For You have been my hope,
O Sovereign Lord,
my confidence since my youth.
